VUB Racing Team Interview
Introduce your team briefly

We are the race team from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel which is often called the VUB. We are 17 enthusiastic industrial engineers with a goal. This goal is to make an electrical race car where as much as possible is built by ourselves. This is why we race under the motto “Built Not Bought”.

Tell us about your team’s history with Formula Student

We started off as a team of 9 students that had a vision to make an electrical race car to become better engineers. During the pandemic it was difficult to keep the team going, but because of the persistence of a core group we got a new team together that is doing everything they can to make the best car possible.

What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?

We are from Belgium, and want to get to know the other teams within the Benelux to widen our network. Next to this we also want to show what we did and learned by building our car.

What are your main goals for this year?

Since it was difficult during corona our goal this year is to have a car that gets through the scrutineering and to compete in the race.

What made you think of/choose FSN?

We will be there with the 3 Belgium teams. We are looking forward to competing against them.

What makes you different from the other teams?

We build everything we possibly can ourselves. This includes the motors, the battery packs, and everything mechanical.

Describe your car in three words

Built Not Bought

What is your most significant achievement in Formula Student so far?

We finished second in the formula student race in Andorra in 2019.

Do you think there are any positive outcomes for the competition from the current situation?

We are hopeful the competition can progress as it was before Covid.

What can the Formula Student organising bodies do to help the struggling teams due to the recent events?

Feedback from the documents we upload to the website would be helpful for us.

Did your team help your local society with the COVID-19 situation?

Yes, we did, we built a prototype machine to help the hospitals with the shortage of breather machines. This project was called Breathney, more info about it can be found at breathney.vub.be

Campus Tirol Motorsport Team Interview
Introduce your team briefly

We are Campus Tirol Motorsport, a young Formula Student team from Innsbruck, Austria.  This season, more than fifty students from our four Tyrolean partner universities are joining forces to help CTM take the next step with the e04, being the fourth generation of our electric racecar.

Tell us about your Team’s history with Formula Student

CTM’s history began in 2016 with the ambitious plans of a group of students, who set their sights on establishing a Formula Student team incorporating all four Tyrolean universities. Right from the beginning, we were fully committed to electric vehicles. After some years of a steep learning curve, with a number of event visits without a full-fledged vehicle, FS Austria 2021 marked the first time CTM participated in an event with an entirely functional and rule compliant vehicle and scored its first points. This year, we want to build on last year’s learnings and are eager to gain experiences outside Austria for the first time.

What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?

Going to Formula Student Netherlands is a big milestone for CTM, as it marks our first event participation outside our home country. This makes FSN a reward for the hard work the team has put in throughout the last years and provides an exciting opportunity for us to visit new places in Europe together with the team.

What are your main goals for this year?

We want to continue our journey and improve on what we achieved last year. Our main goal this season is to score points in every event discipline. Especially in the endurance race, this will be a big task – but we are looking forward to giving it our best shot and rising to the challenge.

What made you think of/choose FSN?

With a strong performance at the registration quizzes, we qualified for both FSN and FSG. For this year, we decided to participate in one additional competition besides our home event at FSA. We picked FS Netherlands as it provides a great opportunity to drive CTM forward and prepare for our home event, which takes place not long afterwards.

What makes you different from the other teams?

Our pure electric heritage – while many other teams gather their first Formula Student experience in the combustion class before going electric, we decided to take the more challenging path by immediately starting with an electric car.

Describe your car in three words.

Simple, Light, Green

What is your most significant achievement in Formula Student so far?

So far, finishing last year’s FSA Scruti is our biggest achievement, and also more than we had expected before arriving there last year. This year our goal is to smash that achievement and score some dynamic points.

Do you think there are any positive outcomes for the competition from the current situation?

You grow from challenges. The pandemic showed us what the possibilities and restraints of remote work are. All of us at CTM are happy to get back to personal collaboration in our workshop, but the experiences made throughout these times still provide valuable insights about work and organization going forward.

What can the formula Student organising bodies do to help the struggling teams due to the recent events?

Recent times have certainly not made the process of finding new sponsors easier. We understand that also the events heavily rely on partners and sponsors and will therefore be equally challenged by the situation. Nevertheless, lower costs for participation would be of big help to counter those difficulties for teams.

CTM in a nutshell:

Campus Tirol Motorsport is very excited to compete outside of Austria for the first time and we hope to score our first dynamic points ever in Assen. Let’s have some fun according to our motto “design, build, race, repeat”.

Formula Student Team Delft Interview
Introduce your team briefly

We are Formula Student Team Delft but we go by DUT (Delft University of Technology). Specifically we are DUT22 as we are competing for the 22nd time in our history. Our team is 90 members strong this year with 30 of those members working full time.

Tell us about your team’s history with Formula Student

We started making combustion cars before switching to electric in 2011. We have been to many different competitions throughout the years including the United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, USA, Austria and of course The Netherlands! We have been fortunate enough to have won Germany 6 times, UK 3 times and we won in The Netherlands in 2019.

What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?

As fans of motorsport it is special to compete at ‘The Cathedral’. It is even more special having it in our own backyard! It is also an opportunity to regain the title and try to improve our wet skid pad world record.

What are your main goals for this year?

To win!

What made you think of/choose FSN?

FSN has always been very well organised and we knew that many of the best teams in the world are joining this year.

What makes you different from the other teams?

We strive to embody the spirit of Formula Student by competing fiercely to win while doing whatever we can to help our competitors perform as well as possible. We all joined Formula Student for a challenge so we want the competition to be as tough as possible! One of the ways we do this is by bringing a truck with a lathe, mill and general workbench tools to each competition which certainly helps us if something goes wrong on our car but is mostly used to help our competitors build and fix parts on their cars.

Describe your car in three words

Potentially very fast

Do you think there are any positive outcomes for the competition from the current situation?

It teaches us to value the time we can spend at the workshop or at the competition.

What can the Formula Student organising bodies do to help the struggling teams due to the recent events?

I think a forum for sharing parts between all the teams could help.

Did your team help your local society with the COVID-19 situation?

We joined an initiative at TU Delft called Project Inspiration. The goal was to reverse engineer an emergency ventilator that could be cheaply and domestically produced in developing countries. We provided our systems/electrical/mechanical/CAD design capabilities and managed the failure mode and effect analysis.
