HFS Team Interview

Amira Tamam

* Introduce your team briefly.
HFS was founded in 2015 by a group of international students from HAN automotive. We were the first team to design, build, test, compete and finish at FSG within a year of the founding of the team. This year we have 27 team members from all around the world.
*Tell us about your team’s history with Formula Student.
We have been participating in Formula student since our founding in 2015 and were the first team to compete in FSG within 1 year of the founding of the team. This will be our 6th year participating in Formula student.
*What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?
Because FSN got cancelled last year due to COVID-19, the students of the team last year haven’t been able to see their creation compete. FSN this year gives the opportunity for this years and last years students, to see their hard work and creation finally compete.
*What are your main goals for this year?
Our first goal is to build a car capable of completing all events at FSN and FSCzech. Our second goal is to get as much preparation done so we have a smooth transition to an electrical powertrain next year, so we can successfully compete in the EV class next year.
*What made you think of/choose FSN?
Firstly as a dutch based team, FSN gives the best opportunity for all team members to come to the event. Secondly, we see it as a good way to support the automotive industry in the Netherlands and promote the HAN who give us a lot of support.
*What makes you different from the other teams?
We are a small team, with a small budget. The team members consist of 2nd year students who do this as a project next to their regular classes. The management consists of 3rd year students who are doing their internship. Because of our small budget and size, we have to be creative to design cheap but solid components. Most of our components are self-produced, for example, our frame is completely welded by our current team manager.  What we offer is for students to not only learn how to design components but also how to produce those components.
*What is your biggest achievement in Formula Student so far?
Finishing all events at FSG in our first year competing.
*Describe your car in three words.
Pink, Simple, Quality
*How did COVID-19 affect your team and how did you deal with it?
COVID-19 had a huge effect on our team. During the 2nd lockdown, production was halted for some weeks. Together with the HAN we came up with a solution to restart production whilst following the rules set by the government. Because of the rules set by the Dutch government, we had to move our meetings online on Microsoft teams.
