Rennteam Uni Stuttgart Team Interview

Amira Tamam

  • Introduce your team briefly.
About 30 highly motivated students are currently part of the Rennteam Uni Stuttgart and working on our 2021 racing car, the F0711-15 or “11-15”. Eleven different courses of study are represented from three different Universities and Colleges: The University of Stuttgart, the Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart, and the University of Hohenheim.
  • Tell us about your team’s history with Formula Student.
Since its founding in 2005, the Rennteam Uni Stuttgart e.V. has competed in 58 competitions in the CV class of Formula Student, as well as Formula SAE Michigan and Australasia. With the exception of a small core team from the previous year, the team is completely changed every season with the goal to construct an improved race car based on the previous one. With this approach, we have now completed our 15th car.
  • What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?
We are competing at FS Netherlands for the first time this year, so we only know the event from the livestreams and reports of other teams. For the majority of the team, even if it can, unfortunately, be very few this year, it is the first Formula Student competition ever. Accordingly, the anticipation of gaining new experiences and the expectations of the new track is great.
  • What are your main goals for this year?
After a year without competitions, we naturally want to successfully complete endurance and crown our first FSN visit with a podium finish.
  • What made you think of/choose FSN?
We were looking for new challenges and FSN is perfectly at the beginning of the race calendar. In addition, we would like to gain initial experience for the next team there. After the announced extension of the CV to hybrid drive systems, FSN’22 is a very interesting destination for the Rennteam team.
  • What makes you different from the other teams?
No other team has the Mercedes star on its nose next to the Ferrari horse. Joking aside, the horse of course does not stand for Ferrari but springs from the Stuttgart city coat of arms. In addition to the excellent exchange with our alumni, the large number of courses represented, from aerospace engineering to automotive engineering, corporate communications, and business administration, is great strength in mastering the interdisciplinary tasks of Formula Student.
  • What is your biggest achievement in Formula Student so far?
That would certainly be the overall victories in Michigan in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. But the overall record of 45 podium finishes in 58 races is also impressive.
  • Describe your car in three words.
    Fast n’ loud
  • How did COVID-19 affect your team and how did you deal with it?
Initially, we had to shut down work on-site for several weeks, which was very gruelling in the then upcoming assembly phase, because that work cannot be done from the home office. After that, we introduced a shift schedule to better coordinate the work on the vehicle while ensuring compliance with hygiene measures. A second coffee machine for the workshop has certainly improved morale and work ethic significantly.
