PWR Racing Team Interview

Amira Tamam

  • Introduce your team briefly.
We are the first Formula Student team in Poland. Since 2009 we have designed and manufactured 10 cars so far and the 11th – RT11 is being prepared for this season.  We are a group of 80 students from Wrocław. We create a place where future engineers can share and develop their ideas and make new friends.

  • Tell us about your team’s history with Formula Student.
We have started in 2009 as a young and inexperienced but ambitious team. Since our race car RT06 we have been winning particular events. During every competition, we have been learning a lot and it led us directly to 1st place at Formula SAE Italy 2017.

  • What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?
This is our first edition of Formula Student Netherlands. We can gain a new important experience. Additionally, this is the first event in our season (and after a break due to COVID-19) so we want to finally meet people from other teams and take part in a competition.

  • What are your main goals for this year?
This year is significant for us – we start in Combustion Vehicle class for the last time before we switch to electric and driverless cars. This project is the culmination of the knowledge and experience we gained in past years. We believe we can repeat the success of our different cars and be placed high during the competition.

  • What made you think of/choose FSN?
We have never been to FSN so it will be a perfect opportunity to try a new race track and gain some experience. Moreover, we have heard so much about this competition so we decided to join that event.

  • What makes you different from the other teams?
Our team comes from the technical university but we also have non-technical members who help us create our car. We have a movie director who actually studies at Film School or graphic designer from Art School.

  • What is your biggest achievement in Formula Student so far?
We had a great season in 2017 when we got 1st place at Formula SAE Italy and 3rd place in the Formula Student Czech Republic. We also took 1st place in the Acceleration in both editions. Next year we won again in the Acceleration in Italy and the Czech Republic, and got 2nd place in the general classification at Formula Student Czech Republic and 3rd place at Formula SAE Italy. In 2019 we improved our skills in other dynamics events and took 2nd place in Endurance, Autocross and general classification, again at Formula Student Czech Republic.

  • Describe your car in three words.
    Simple, like winning

  • How did COVID-19 affect your team and how did you deal with it?
The pandemic of COVID-19 has changed our way of work completely. We were forced to do everything remotely. We have our team meetings online and we communicate and work using distance-learning programs which help us manage the project and people. It has been a tough year – we weren’t able to take part in the competition, but we kept working through the entire 2020. We did the whole design process of our first electric car remotely. During the summer we were able to work at our workshop, keeping in mind all of the restrictions. That allowed us to start the manufacturing of our race car. Thanks to that we can now start in Formula Student Netherlands.
