After the FSN collaboration with FSUK, more teams can now participate in both events and benefit from fast track scrutineering. One of these teams are the history makers, Cardiff Racing, being the first UK team to win FSUK in 2017, now expanding their competition horizon to the Netherlands.

  • Introduce your team briefly.

Cardiff Racing are based in, well, Cardiff. The team itself is made up of Engineering students from every year group, from day one right through to PhD, with a couple of students from other schools getting more involved every year. We are very proud of being Welsh and our mascot, Delilah, is never far away.

  • Tell us about your team’s history with Formula Student.

First competing in 2004 we quickly found ourselves building very competitive cars with a modest budget. A mainstay of CR cars is the Aluminium sandwich panel monocoques that have featured in every car except our very first. Back with CR10 we became the fastest non-aero car at FSUK 2014, Since then we have added aerodynamics, changed to a more powerful engine, and generally improving each and every year.

  • What does joining Formula Student Netherlands mean to you?

Cardiff Racing is made up of motorsport enthusiasts and so the Circuit TT Assen has a special appeal, and with it being so close before FSUK we will need to get CR15 built and tested in good time to ensure we can be successful at both events.

  • What are your main goals for this year?

Finish both endurance events, reduce fuel consumption, and improve results in all static events

  • What made you think of/choose FSN?

Since FSN started we have been interested in attending, but this was the first year there hasn’t been a clash of dates and so we jumped at the opportunity.

  • What makes you different than the other teams?

We like to have our fun, never quite following the accepted wisdom, and just generally doing our own thing. Cardiff Racing spend much of our time each year promoting Engineering to the general public in the South Wales area, including many school visits where we often let the children sit in one of our cars!

  • What is your biggest achievement in Formula Student so far?
