Become an Engineering Design Judge at FSN!

Do you want to be part of an interdisciplinary, highly motivated, Engineering Design judging group? At FSN we have a diverse group of experienced and newer judges, allowing everyone to learn from one another in a dynamic environment. As an Engineering Design judge you will evaluate the knowledge of Formula Student teams and the quality of their engineering practices while designing and building their Formula Student cars.

FSN is opening applications, looking for judges in the following categories:

  • Structural engineering (i.e. frame and body)
  • Ergonomics
  • CV/EV powertrain
  • Vehicle dynamics
  • Suspension
  • Aerodynamics
  • CV/EV (low-voltage) electronics

You should meet at least one of the following:

  • You have experience participating in the Engineering Design event as a team member, preferably in your scoring category.
  • You are a professional engineer and have experience with at least one of the listed categories.

Our judging process starts two weeks before the start of FSN. We will have a brief Zoom meeting with all design judges. Following that meeting each judge receives the Engineering Design Reports (EDRs) and Design Specification Sheets (DSSs) of the teams that they will be judging. We ask that you look through these documents before the start of FSN and highlight anything specific that you want to ask the teams. We also ask that you arrive at FSN on Sunday before 6 PM. We will have dinner together, followed by a short meeting to finalize things so that everyone is comfortable with the Engineering Design judging sessions on Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday evening we will finalize the event scores of each team and select the finalists. There will be a face-to-face feedback session with the teams on Wednesday morning, the Engineering Design finals will take place on Wednesday evening. This concludes your responsibilities as design judge. You might be asked to act as track marshall during some of the dynamic events if you are comfortable with doing so.

Note that active team members are not allowed to judge, and rule A 4.2.5 of the 2023 Formula Student rules prohibits any judge to participate as as team member at any future Formula Student event. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please attach your resume so we can review your experience, and let us know why you want to be a design judge at FSN. Make sure to mention any Formula Student experience you might have and your expectations of the job of a design judge.
